No. 1 Aggies Drop Astros Foundation College Classic Opener to Arizona
Feb 28, 2025 | Baseball
HOUSTON – A late inning rally doomed the No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team Friday night as they fell to Arizona 3-2 at the Astros Foundation College Classic at Daikin Park.
The Aggies (5-3) entered the top of the ninth clinging to a 2-1 lead but the Wildcats (6-3) rallied for two runs on a pair of infield RBI singles to jump in front 3-2. In the bottom half, Terrence Kiel II beat out an infield single but was later thrown out on the play trying to advance to third on a throwing error. Kaeden Kent followed with a two-out single to bring the potential winning run to the plate but a strikeout ended the final chance for Texas A&M.
The Maroon & White looked to strike early in the opening frame as they loaded the bases with no outs but three consecutive strikeouts ended the threat.
Starter Ryan Prager cruised through the first four frames before running into trouble in the fifth as Arizona loaded the bases with one out. The lefty retired the next two batters via the strikeout to escape the jam and keep the game scoreless.
In the bottom half, Wyatt Henseler put the Aggies on the board with a two-run homer to the Crawford Boxes in left. The long ball was the senior's second of the season and 56th of his career, which is tied for the most among active players.
The Wildcats responded with a solo homer in the sixth to cut the lead to one, 2-1.
Prager delivered another brilliant outing on the mound for Texas A&M as the left-hander allowed one run over 6.1 innings of work. The Aggie ace also struck out a season-high 10 batters and allowed only three hits on the night. In relief, right-hander Clayton Freshcorn suffered the loss after allowing one run in an inning of work.
Inside the Box Score
The Aggies are back in action Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma State at Daikin Park.
