Khirin's NCAA Run Ends in Quarterfinals
Nov 22, 2024 | Women's Tennis
WACO – No. 9 Nicole Khirin dropped her NCAA Division I Singles Championship quarterfinal match to No. 2 Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia, 6-4, 6-2, Friday at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
Khirin's run made her just the fourth player in program history to reach the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Singles Championship. The first two Aggies to reach the quarterfinals were Kim Labuschagne in 1987 and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in 2012. The Maroon & White doubled the number in the last two seasons with Mary Stoiana advancing to the semifinals in spring 2024.
In the first set, Khirin broke Vidmanova's second serve to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldog responded by taking four of the next five games, including all three of Khirin's services over the span.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second set, Khirin clawed back to 3-2 but was unable to draw even.
Texas A&M boasted a couple program firsts at this year's championship, including having three Aggies playing in the tournament and having three players reach the round of 16.
The Aggies return to action January 8-11 when they head to Honolulu for the Hawaii Invitational. The home opener is slated for January 18 against Prairie View A&M.
Friday's Quarterfinal Result
No. 2 Dasha Vidmanova (UGA) def. No. 9 Nicole Khirin (A&M) – 6-4, 6-2
