Two Aggies Advance to NCAA Round of 32
Nov 19, 2024 | Women's Tennis
Stoiana and Khirin win their first rounds matches.
WACO – No. 1 Mary Stoiana and No. 9 Nicole Khirin won their first round matches at the NCAA Division I Singles Championship Tuesday at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center. The No. 1 Texas A&M women's tennis team had two players advance to the round of 32 for the second consecutive season.
Stoiana bookended her match with five-game runs to make quick work of UCLA's Kate Fakih, 6-1, 6-1.
Khirin advanced with a gritty 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over No. 38 Shavit Kimchi of Duke. After dropping a 2-0 advantage and eventually losing the last three games of the first set, Khirin stormed out to a 5-0 lead in the second set. The Aggie appeared to be cruising in the decisive set, up 4-1, before Kimchi responded to knot it at 4-4. Up 5-4 and 40-15, Khirin had an opportunity to put the match away, but Kimchi again proved to be a difficult out, winning the next three points to even the contest again. Khirin would not be deterred claiming deuce points in the next two games to move on to round two.
Daria Smetannikov lost to No. 23 Luciana Perry of Ohio State in a grueling three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 2-6. Smetannikov fell behind early in the first set 2-0, but broke Perry's serve three straight times to take the lead. Unfortunately, the Aggie was unable to erase an early 3-0 deficit in the second set. Smetannikov claimed a 40-all point to nose ahead 1-0 in the decisive set, but Perry won the next four games, including two 40-all points to claim a 4-1 advantage.
Next up for Stoiana is a Wednesday match against No. 55 Piper Charney of Michigan at 10:30 a.m. Khirin battles No. 70 Sabine Rutlauka of Penn in a 12:30 p.m. contest.
