No. 13 Texas A&M Posts 6-1 Win at Vanderbilt
Mar 01, 2020 | Men's Tennis
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 13 Texas A&M men's tennis picked up their second straight SEC win by the score of 6-1, as the Aggies (9-3, 2-0 SEC) dominated the Vanderbilt Commodores (6-5, 0-2 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at the Currey Tennis Center.
"Any road win is a good one in this league especially after the quick turnaround from Friday night's win," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "We pulled away late in the doubles which set the tone for the match. I thought our guys showed mental toughness today."
The Aggies opened up the match winning a back-and-forth doubles point to take an early 1-0 advantage. A&M's Stefan Storch and Hady Habib posted a 7-5 on court three then Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith clinched the point with a 6-2 win on court one.
No. 3 Valentin Vacherot continued to rewrite A&M's record books with his 14th-straight SEC win, defeating No. 109 George Harwell on court one 6-0, 6-0. The win was the 98th overall win for the senior and 67th dual match victory to move into a tie for 10th on A&M's all-time wins list with Jordi Arconada and Arthur Rinderknech, Vacherot's cousin. Additionally, Vacherot improved to 32-4 all-time in SEC matches.
Storch pushed the Aggies ahead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court six against Vandy's Marcus Ferreira followed by the match-clinching victory by Noah Schachter on court three against Max Freeman. No. 31 Aguilar and Smith added singles wins on the day.
