No. 12 Texas A&M Defeats South Carolina Friday Night
Mar 06, 2020 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12 Texas A&M men's tennis team (10-3, 3-0) defeated South Carolina (8-5, 1-2), 6-1, at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center Friday.
"That was an exciting and energetic match tonight," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "We played really well in the doubles and that transitioned nicely into the singles matches. I thought our team loosened up after we got that doubles win in our pocket. We knew this was going to be a huge fight, they are a really good team and we were going to have to play really well to get that win."
The Maroon & White claimed the doubles point to open the match for the fifth straight match. A&M's Noah Schachter and Valentin Vacherot posted the first doubles win of the night, winning 6-3 over Connor Thomson and Phillip Jordan on court two. No. 33 Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith clinched the point with a 6-3 triumph on court one over SC's Paul Jubb and Raphael Lambling.
In singles, the Aggies claimed first sets on five of six courts to maintain the pressure on the Gamecocks. No. 28 Hady Habib doubled the A&M advantage with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court two over SC's Daniel Rodrigues, ranked 46th. No. 111 Smith posted the third point of the night, defeating Thomas Brown 6-2, 6-4 on court five. No. 34 Aguilar clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three over No. 45 Lambling. Guido Marson improved the A&M lead to 5-0 with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win on court six over Jordan.
No. 3 Vacherot continued his hot streak to open the spring season, winning his 11th-straight match and improving to 11-4 against ranked opponents this year. The senior defeated 2019 NCAA Singles Champion, Paul Jubb, in three-sets to pick up his 15th straight SEC regular season victory and earned his 68th singles dual win of his career, tying him for eighth on the A&M all-time list.
The Aggies remain at home for a Sunday showdown against No. 6 Florida at 1 p.m. The Gators were the preseason pick to win the SEC title while the Aggies were chosen as runner-up by the league's coaches.
