No. 10 Texas A&M falls to No. 7 Georgia
Apr 01, 2016 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 10 Texas A&M men's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 7 Georgia Friday evening at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Aggies fell to 20-7 on the season and 5-3 in the SEC, while the Bulldogs improved to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in league play.
The Aggies attempted to climb back into the match forcing third sets on three courts, but the slow start in singles action was too much to overcome. After Jan Zielinski topped AJ Catanzariti 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on court five A&M needed to win all three matches still on the court. The comeback was not to be as No. 35 Austin Smith clinched the Bulldog triumph with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over No. 18 Arthur Rinderknech on court one.
The maroon and white picked up their only point from doubles play. Junior Max Lunkin and sophomore Rinderknech were the first doubles pair off the court, defeating Wayne Montgomery and Emil Reinberg, 6-4, on doubles court three. Seniors Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant topped the 58th ranked pair of Paul Oosterbaan and Jan Zielinski, 6-4, on the second court to clinch the day's first point. Senior Jackson Withrow and freshman Aleksandre Bakshi were knotted up at 4-4 with the nation's No. 5 doubles tandem of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland on the top court when play was halted.
The visiting Bulldogs claimed first sets on five of six courts after dropping the doubles point to open the match. No. 120 Walker Duncan topped No. 90 Jordi Arconada 6-1, 7-6(6) to even the match at one-all, shortly thereafter No. 34 Wayne Montgomery topped No. 45 Shane Vinsant 6-4, 6-3 on court two to stake Georgia to a 2-1 advantage.
Withrow bounced back from dropping the first set 7-5 to Oosterbaan on court four, winning 6-4 in the second. Lunkin fell 7-2 in a first set tie-breaker to Nick Wood on court six, but forced a third set after winning 7-5 in the second. Both matches were unfinished after Georgie clinched the team victory.
Texas A&M wraps up the weekend taking on No. 59 South Carolina and Texas-Arlington Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies and Gamecocks are set to face off at 11 a.m. Sunday followed by a 4:30 p.m. match up against the Mavericks.

Thoughts on today's match…
"I was real pleased with the doubles point again, I thought our guys came out and played with a lot of energy to open the match. We got ahead in some of the singles matches, but just couldn't keep the lead. Give Georgia a lot of credit, they fought hard and were able to turn some matches around. Our guys had a lot of missed opportunities out there today."
On the weather…
"The weather was the same on both sides of the net, we don't like to let our guys use that as an excuse. In fact we are a pretty good team in bad conditions, we play in these kind of conditions for practice all the time. So again we have to give Georgia credit, they came in and overcame some wind and dusted us pretty good tonight. We had some matches get away from us and they had a lot to do with that."
Looking forward to Sunday's matches…
"I'm looking for a rebound and some mental toughness from our guys. We have put ourselves in a tough spot in the SEC race, but there are still a bunch of things to play for this season and to get it right before the end of the season. The SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament, there are a lot of things we can work to improve on and that starts Sunday."
