COLLEGE STATION – The 4th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs men's tennis team handed the 10th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies their first SEC defeat on the year, 4-1, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens Friday afternoon. With the win, Georgia moved to 10-2 on the season and 3-0 in league play while Texas A&M fell to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in SEC action.
For the first time this spring the Aggies dropped the doubles point to begin a dual match. The maroon and white had won seven straight doubles points heading into Friday's match, with an impressive 15-1 doubles record this spring. A&M's 8th-ranked doubles team of Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant were tripped up by No. 10 Austin Smith and Ben Wagland, the junior tandem was 5-0 this spring and 7-0 this year against ranked opponents prior to today's defeat.
The freshman duo of AJ Catanzariti and Arthur Rinderknech pulled the doubles match back even at one, defeating Wayne Montgomery and Paul Oosterbaan on court three. The Bulldogs captured the point with a win from Eric Diaz and Nathan Pasha over No. 22 Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo on the second doubles court.
The home team's lead increased to 2-0 as No. 16 Pasha defeated No. 39 Adams on court three in straight sets. The Aggies only point on the day came from Rinderknech over Wagland on court four in straight sets. The Frenchman claimed his sixth straight win for the maroon and white.
The red and black clinched the match victory with wins from Oosterbaan and Nick Wood on court six and five, respectively. Oosterbaan defeated sophomore Max Lunkin 6-2, 7-5 while Wood clinched the match victory over No. 88 Catanzariti.
The Aggies stay on the road to face No. 34 South Carolina Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT).
