No. 15 Texas A&M outhit Kansas 16-12 but the Aggie pitching staff surrendered eight walks in a 9-7 loss to the Jawhawks Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
Entering the top of the ninth down 9-6, Texas A&M mounted a rally that would fall one hit shy of tying the game. With one out, Justin Ruggiano beat out an infield single and moved to third on a single to right by Coby Mavroulis. John Infante grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning before Matt Alexander's ground-rule double down the line on right scored Ruggiano. With the tying run on second, Travis Bartek's line drive was speared by third baseman Travis Metcalf to end the game.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 29-9 overall and to 6-6 in Big 12 play. Kansas improved to 24-16-1 and 2-7.
A&M jumped on Kansas starter Mike Zagurski for three runs in the top of the second. Craig Stinson started the inning with a single through the right side and moved to third on a double to left by Ruggiano. Both runners moved up a bag on a double to right by Mavroulis. After a lineout and a walk to Andrew Baldwin loaded the bases, Bartek lifted a sacrifice fly to right to plate Ruggiano. Erik Schindewolf followed with a RBI single to left.
Kansas tied the game in the bottom of the second with three runs on just two hits. J.C. Sibley drove in the first run with a two-out single. Three consecutive walks by A&M starter Dan Donaldson forced two more runs across. Justin Moore replaced Donaldson and struck out Ryan Baty to end the inning and the threat.
Donaldson lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. He walked four hitters and struck out one.
Ruggiano drove in Cliff Pennington with his third hit of the afternoon in the top of the fifth. Pennington singled to start the inning, moved to second on a single by Craig Stinson and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Zagurski was lifted after a lead walk to John Infante. Reliever Don Czyz coaxed Andrew Baldwin to ground into a double play to erase Infante. After a two-out double by Travis Bartek, another reliever, Sean Land, struck out Schindewolf to end the inning.
Kansas took its first lead of the weekend in the bottom of the seventh with four runs off four different A&M pitchers. RBI singles by Ritchie Price and Sean Richardson, both off Kyle Marlatt, gave the Jayhawks their first lead of the weekend. Blake Rampy replaced Marlatt and walked the only two men he faced to force in another run. Austin Creps surrendered a sacrifice fly which plated the final run of the inning to make the score 7-4.
The Aggies touched Land for two runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Jawhawk lead to 7-6. Austin Boggs singled and Stinson and Ruggiano walked to load the bases with one out. Mavroulis singled to left to move everyone up a base, and Infante drove a sacrifice fly to right to score Stinson.
Kansas scored what turned out to be two important insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-RBI single by Andy Scholl.
The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, April 13, when they host Houston. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
