SARASOTA, Fla. -- Texas A&M's Trey Dickey had an impressive showing at Open Water National Championships over the weekend, posting top-four finishes in the both the 10K and 5K races at Nathan Benderson Park.
Dickey started the weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 10K, battling to the end to clock a time of 1:53:29. With his finish, Dickey earned a spot on Team USA's 10K squad. The Murphy, Texas, native closed out the weekend with a bronze-medal finish in the 5K, clocking in at 54:57 on Sunday morning.
"Trey did a great job representing us this weekend," Texas A&M men's swimming & diving head coach Jay Holmes said. "Making the USA National Team in the 10K is something we've talked about and worked for. His strategy that he and our staff decided on was to hang with lead group until the last kilometer and then begin reeling guys in. He did just that. His last 500 meters was fun to watch. Trey has the ability to have speed at the end, even after that many kilometers into a race. Being the third-fastest American at this race is showing Trey is continuing to get better.
"In today's 5K, Trey got third with the same strategy he used in the 10K on Friday. With the confidence he gained from the 10K we all hoped he could be closer to the leader on that last straightaway. His last 500 meters was again really fast, just wasn't close enough to catch the winner."
