Aggies Topple South Carolina with Watt’s 100th-Minute Header
Oct 25, 2018 | Soccer
Texas A&M handed the Gamecocks their first SEC home loss since Oct. 16, 2015.
The Aggies ended the regular season with a 15-3-1 mark overall and a 6-3-1 mark in SEC action. South Carolina dropped to 12-4-1 overall and 6-3-1 in league action.
The defenses owned the first half with the squads combining for just seven shots in the opening act. Texas A&M's Ally Watt accounted for the only shot-on-goal in the first half, stripping the ball from a defender in the ninth minute to set a shot from the top of the penalty box. Watt sent a ball to the left post, but Mikayla Krzeczowski made the diving save.
Texas A&M had a pair of golden opportunities for the game winner late in the second half. In the 78th minute, Emily Bates set up Watt for a one-on-one opportunity from 12 yards out, but it went a whisker wide of the right post. The Aggies had two well-taken corner kicks in the final three minutes of regulation, but were unable to put one into goal.
Shots were even for the match, 13-13, but the Aggies' owned a 5-1 edge in the overtime period. Texas A&M also held a 4-2 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 5-4 margin in corner kicks.
