COLLEGE STATION – The No. 2 Texas A&M equestrian team overpowered No. 8 South Carolina, 14-6, Friday in the spring home opener at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
"I'm proud of our girls. Anytime we are playing an SEC team, we know it is going to be extremely tough, so we were glad to be on our home turf. We were excited about some of the rides we had and coming away with a big win like that," Texas A&M head coach Tana McKay said. "This was a great start. From here it is just hitting the videos and having more time in the arena to practice. Now it is just coming down to fine tuning some stuff and mental preparation for our meets against Georgia and Auburn."
The Aggies (7-2, 3-1 SEC) started out early with a 3-2 lead following Equitation over Fences as junior Rachael Hake scored the first point of the meet with a 84-83 victory over Lizzie van der Walde. Senior Haley Webster followed with a 79-75 win against Chloe Schmidt, before sophomore Rebekah Chenelle earned the final point, 87-84 from Madison Butehorn, to put the Aggies on top.
In the western arena, Texas A&M won Horsemanship, 4-1. Sophomore Sarah Orsak tallied a point for the Aggies after defeating Courtney Allen 70.5-66. Earning the next two points were senior Rachel Lucht who outscored Paige Stopperich, 71-69.5, and junior Avery Ellis who earned a 77 to down Megan Overberg's 71.5. Senior Kaci Fisher scored the final point, winning 77-71.5 over Maddie Thiel and earned MOP honors.
Heading into Equitation on Flat, the Aggies led 7-3 and extended their lead to 10-5. Senior Anna Rea tallied the first point for the Aggies after defeating Lizzie van der Walde 88-83. Chenelle edged out Sydney Smith 84-83 to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead, before junior Maddie Swem earned the final point for the Aggies after defeating Chloe Schmidt 83-77.
In the final event, Texas A&M continued to control the western arena after winning Reining, 4-1. Senior Sarah Kate Grider opened the event with a point after beating Paisley Roberts, 74-73. Sophomore Haley Franc earned the highest scoring ride of the day with a 76, downing Bailey Walters, 76-73, to earn MOP honors. Senior Sarah McEntire topped Maddie Thiel, 71.5-70.5, followed by junior Jaci Marley, who closed the meet with a 66.5-66 victory over Jordan Scott.
