Erik Schindewolf, Cliff Pennington and Austin Boggs each had two hits and Coby Mavroulis and Justin Ruggiano each drove in two runs to lead No. 15 Texas A&M to a 8-3 win over Sam Houston before 4,369 fans at Olsen Field.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 27-8 while Sam Houston dropped to 12-17-1. The win marked the third of the season over the Bearkats. Texas A&M is now 6-1 in mid-week games and 24-3 in non-conference contests.
Texas A&M returns to Big 12 play this weekend when it plays Kansas in a three-game set at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence. First pitch for game one will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 9.
A&M took the early lead in the bottom of the first when Mavroulis's sacrifice fly scored Erik Schindewolf.
The Aggies chased Sam Houston starting pitcher Ryan Herrera in the bottom of the fourth when they scored four runs to increase their lead to 5-0. The rally started when Todd Stroud drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a balk. Kevin Whelan's infield single moved Stroud to third but when shortstop Jeremy Holzbach tried to throw out Whelan at first, his throw sailed into the dugout, allowing both runners to advance. After Schindewolf walked, Pennington singled to chase Whelan home. Austin Boggs walked to load the bases and Mavroulis drove in his second run of the game with an infield single. Timothy Gray replaced Herrera and walked Ruggiano to force across the final run of the inning and make the score 5-0.
The Bearkats scored their first run of the game in the top of the sixth off reliever Dan Donaldson. Jonathon Stone scored on a wild pitch but the run was unearned as an error by Pennington at shortstop prolonged the inning.
Donaldson threw the middle three for the Aggies, allowing only the unearned run. He surrendered two hits, fanned four and walked two.
A&M's third pitcher of the day, Doug Frame, allowed two runs in the top of the seventh. Ryan Trevino and Stone each drove in runs with a single to cut the Aggie lead to 5-3. Robert Ray replaced Frame with runners on second and third and struck out pinch hitter Marshall Williams to prevent further damage.
The Aggies added three insurance runs in the eighth to run their lead to 8-3. Ruggiano drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly, John Infante drove in a run with a double and Andrew Baldwin, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a wild pitch.
Austin Creps (2-0) earned the win in a predetermined three-inning start. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Herrera (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits. He walked five and struck out two.
Ray earned his first save of the season, by pitching a scoreless 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
