POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Trisha Ford
On today overall…
"Great job in both games. I thought the Michigan State game had a good feel to it. We had quite a few fans here so it felt like an exciting game. I thought [Emily] Leavitt did a great job of pounding the zone and throwing her off-speed which allowed her to throw seven complete innings. Offensively, we came out of the gates aggressively. We were really focused. Their pitcher did a really good job throwing off speed at us. Shaylee [Ackerman] pitched a great game and she wanted to finish it. Overall, she's getting better, we're working on things and I'm really excited about what she's doing in the circle. Riley Valentine hit some home runs in the fall but officially hit her first collegiate home run tonight."
On hitting in the second game versus the first…
"I think it was a multitude of things. Michigan State's pitcher was able to keep us off balance a little bit. The second game we came out with good energy. It's the focus thing, what I do like is we're focusing on the second half of things. As we get through this season, the second game or third game and even later on in the innings I'm going to see that piece sharpen up."
Outfielder Keely Williams
On her three hits and three RBIs…
"I was just looking for the best pitch that they could throw me. They were throwing a lot of balls around the plate, trying to make us chase. I was just trying to stay in my line and not try to do anything overcoming. Just stuck to my plan."
On getting the first jitters out as a freshman…
"In the fall, we only had three games, and my first official game was Texas State (the third game). So, I only got one game before the official season. The first three games went by and I was a little bit jittery. Now, I feel more comfortable with the team and just ready to play for the rest of the season."
Starting Pitcher Shaylee Ackerman
On just missing a no-hitter…
"Just a little [bummed out]. I realized going into that last inning that it was there, I tried to keep that thought out of my head, but it creeped in a little."
On regulating herself this season to only pitching…
"I think it's going to be a different mindset. I'm going to go a little crazy in the dugout only pitching because I'm used to being all over the field, but I think it's going to really help me throughout the season staying healthy with my body."
