GAME PREVIEW: Sam Houston State
May 15, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 22 Texas A&M Aggies wrap up their non-conference slate Tuesday as they host the Sam Houston State Bearkats in a 6:32 pm contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Aggies look to continue their strong play in midweek action. Since April 8, 2014, the Maroon and White have won 40 of their last 44 midweek games, including an 11-2 mark this season.
Junior Turner Larkins takes the mound for the Aggies as he looks to continue his success from his last start. In the Aggies' May 2 victory against Houston Baptist, Larkins, who was hampered early by injury and illness, earned his first win of the season, holding the Huskies to one unearned on four hits and two walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings.
Southpaw reliever Kaylor Chafin has been one of the hottest pitchers in the nation since the beginning of April. In his 10 appearances in April and May, Chafin has not allowed a run over 25.1 innings. The junior has scattered seven hits and five walks while striking out 29 en route to a 5-0 record. His numbers include an .086 opponent batting average and 0.55 WHIP over the span. His mastery includes getting out of jams as he has stranded all nine runners he's inherited in April and May.
Braden Shewmake ranks 10th in the nation in RBI (61) and 14th in the nation in hits (78). He leads all Division I freshmen in hits, total bases and RBI.
The game will be available for viewing on SEC Network + with Will Johnson and Mark Johnson on the call. SEC Network + provides digital-only events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). All three games will air on SportsRadio 1150/102.7 The Zone.
