GAME PREVIEW: Houston Baptist
May 01, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 17 Texas A&M Aggies look to continue their hot streak as they host the Houston Baptist Huskies in a 6:32 pm contest Tuesday on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Maroon and White have won 17 of their last 21 games, including their current four-game win streak. The Aggies' current run includes winning two-of-three against then-No. 8 LSU, then-No. 11 Auburn and Tennessee along with three-game road series sweeps at Alabama and Missouri.
The Aggies' pitching staff has been especially outstanding the last nine games, logging a 1.27 ERA with 90 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP in 85.0 innings.
Texas A&M's bullpen looks to continue its strong play from April. During the 17 games in April the bullpen was 8-1 with seven saves, a 1.19 ERA and a .167 opponent batting average in 60.1 innings of work. The relievers boasted a 1.01 WHIP and 66 strikeouts for the month. Kaylor Chafin led the staff with 18.2 scoreless innings, scattering four hits and five walks while striking out 20 to earn a 4-0 mark in his seven appearances. He posted a WHIP of 0.59 and opponent batting average of 0.69 in April.
Braden Shewmake is coming off his second SEC Rookie of the Week honor. On the season, he is batting .361 (70-for-194) with 33 runs, 14 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 52 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Shewmake leads all NCAA Division I freshmen in hits and RBI. He ranks ninth in the nation overall in hits and 16th in RBI.
This season the Aggies have been mauling teams in the fifth and sixth innings, outscoring opponents 100-22 during the two frames. The surges have helped offset a slim 94-92 run advantage for the Aggies in innings 1-thru-4.
Dating back to the 2014 season, the Aggies have won 39 of their last 43 midweek contests, including a 10-2 mark in 2017. The Maroon and White are averaging 7.7 runs per game, hitting .298 with a .402 on-base percentage and 23 stolen bases.
The game will be available for viewing on SEC Network + with Will Johnson and Mark Johnson on the call. SEC Network + provides digital-only events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One).
