SERIES PREVIEW: UT Rio Grande Valley
Mar 06, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies return to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park for a five-game homestand, starting with games against UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Maroon and White look to snap a two-game losing streak which included a pair of walk-off losses at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. The Aggies are 8-1 at Blue Bell Park in 2017.
The Aggies currently lead the nation in triples (13) and triples per game (1.08). The current pace would give Texas A&M 60 after the regular-season, well over the school record of 32 set in 1982 and equaled in 1989. The Aggies' 13 triples are well ahead of the 11 teams tied for second with seven triples apiece. George Janca already has four three-baggers on the year, equaling the team-high from last season. Janca is tied with three other players for the national lead. Joel Davis, Blake Kopetsky and Braden Shewmake each have two triples on the year.
The Aggies also rank 11th in the nation in doubles (31) and boast the nation's leader with Shewmake's eight two-baggers.
Dating back to the 2014 season, the Aggies have won 32 of their last 34 midweek contests, including a 3-0 mark in 2017.
Six Texas A&M freshmen combined to hit 62-for-156 (.397) with 47 runs, 16 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and 40 RBI in the first 12 games of the season. Two Aggies have already garnered SEC Freshman of the Week accolades early in the season with Shewmake taking home the award the opening week and Logan Foster earning the recognition on Monday.
UTRGV enters the fray with a 10-2 record, including winning two of three against Lamar last weekend. The Vaqueros started the season with four-game series sweeps of both Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M.
