Collegiate leading marks from Audrey Malone, Robert Grant at Castillo Invitational

TEMPE – In winning the javelin Friday evening, Audrey Malone produced an early season collegiate leader of 181 feet, 8 inches during the first day of competition at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational. Also setting a collegiate leading mark was Robert Grant with a 50.07 performance in the 400m hurdles.

Malone hit 181-8 (55.37) twice, in the third and fourth rounds, before passing her final two attempts.
"It's a great way to start," stated Malone. "My practices have been going eh lately, but I trusted the training and everything that I've been doing."
The Aggies dominated the women's javelin, placing 1-2-4-6 with career best throws from the trio of Shelby Poncik (171-9 | 52.36), Kristen Clark (171-7 | 52.31) and Madalaine Stulce (166-2 | 50.65) finishing behind Malone. Poncik's debut performance with the Aggies moves her to No. 7 on the Texas A&M all-time list. Clark is now at No. 9 and Stulce slides in at No. 12.
"We all threw great today," noted Malone. "All of my teammates set a PR, which was amazing and just proves how great our program is. We keep each other light and free. We know what each of us is capable of since we work together in practice. It's nice to have a friend to calm you down or take away your anxiety."
Malone was in range of her career best of 187-2 (57.06), which placed her third in the NCAA Championships a year ago. Her series opened with a 153-0 followed by a 179-2. Then came the identical pair of 181-8 in rounds three and four.
"I would have loved to hit 57 meters right off the bat here," said Malone. "That didn't happen, but I have a lot to work on. My sister Maggie's record (204-0 | 62.19) is a goal of mine, I've told her she's only going to have it for a year. I at least want to get to 60 meters at least."
A time 50.07 seconds started the season off for Grant in the 400m hurdles, which is currently fifth best in the world this season heading into the weekend. It's the sixth fastest time run by Grant over his career. Iowa's Noah Larrison finished second in 51.02 as Aggie Ilolo Izu claimed third in 51.56 with his debut race in the event.
Last season Grant opened with a 51.37 at this meet and then followed up with a 50.21 in San Antonio a week later. This indoor season, Grant improved his 400m time to 46.61 during the SEC Indoor Championships and ran second leg on the Aggies 4x400 that set a meet record in winning the NCAA Indoor title.
Elijah Morrow topped the 200m field that was comprised of seven sections. Morrow's 20.93 bettered the 20.94 from Iowa's Mar'yea Harris and a 20.95 by Drelan Bramwell of Arizona State.
The women's 200m featured a pair of post-collegians as Kori Carter bettered the field with a 23.07 with Leah Nugent runner-up at 23.50. Aggie Briyahna Desrosiers finished third overall at 23.72 and was the top collegian with Kentucky's Kiah Seymour in fourth at 23.74. Aggie Glorilisha Carter finished 12th overall with a 24.32. In the women's 400m hurdles Lauren Lawless placed third in 1:01.01.
Carl Johansson finished third in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 17-0 ½ (5.20) as he was one of three to clear that height. NCAA Indoor champion Chris Nilsen of South Dakota won the event at 18-6 ½ (5.65). Jacob Wooten tied for eighth with two other vaulters, clearing 16-0 ¾ (4.90) while Audie Wyatt didn't clear his opening height of 17-4 ½ (5.30).
The hammer throw opened the outdoor season for the Aggies and Alison Ondrusek set a career best of 196-7 (59.93) in placing fourth. That effort moves Ondrusek to No. 3 performer with the No. 3 performance on the Aggie all-time list. Arizona State's Maggie Ewen claimed the win at 224-3 (68.36).
Carissa van Beek followed her teammate in sixth place with a mark of 194-5 (59.26) while Celine Markert established a personal best of 163-10 (49.95) to place 17th. Markert is now No. 9 on the Texas A&M all-time list.
In the men's hammer Austin Cook opened with a toss of 204-2 (62.25) to place fourth. Arizona State's Kyle Long claimed the victory at 206-0 (62.80).
Middle distance racing for the Aggies had Alex Riba placing third in the 1,500 with a time of 3:47.32. Cameron Villarreal placed eighth in 3:48.08 while Taylor Clayton finished 11th at 3:51.66.
The women's 1,500 had Katie Willard placing eighth with a clocking of 4:34.87 as Arin Rice finished 10th in 4:35.47. Racing in the steeplechase over 2,000m, Hannah Campbell ran 7:06.07 to place sixth as Haley Deakins turned in a 7:23.88 for 12th.
