SERIES PREVIEW: Pepperdine
Feb 23, 2017 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Off to a 4-0 start for the fourth consecutive season, Texas A&M Baseball looks to build on the momentum as they continue their nine-game homestand on Friday. The Maroon and White welcome a 3-0 Pepperdine Waves to Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park for a three-game series.
Six Texas A&M freshmen combined to hit 26-for-53 (.491) with 23 runs, four doubles, three triples, three home runs and 20 RBI in the first four games of the season. Braden Shewmake, who earned SEC Freshman of the Week recognition for his performance the opening weekend, is hitting .421 (8-for-19) with five runs, two doubles, one triple and eight RBI, including four ribbies in his debut. Jorge Gutierrez reached base in nine of his 11 plate appearances, going 5-for-7 with four walks, one triple, three home runs, six runs and five RBI.
Along with the freshman, senior Nick Choruby is off to a torrid start. He's hitting .625 (10-for-16) with 10 runs, one double, one home run and five RBI.
The Aggies bullpen has been stout early in 2017, notching a 1.74 ERA and .194 opponent batting average in 20.2 innings of work. Landon Miner is leading the way with 4.0 innings of no-hit work out of the bullpen, retiring all 11 batters he's faced. Cason Sherrod has worked 3.0 blank frames, scattering one hit while striking out two. Mason Cole has earned the lone win out of the bullpen, earning the victory against SFA with two scoreless innings of work. He has a 0.00 ERA through 3.0 innings.
The Waves started the year with a three-game sweep of the Saint Joseph's Hawks in Malibu, including wins of 8-0, 7-5 and 9-5. Pepperdine's midweek game against Cal State Northridge was suspended due to darkness.
Last season, the Aggies won two of three against Pepperdine in picturesque Malibu.
Every game of the series will be available for viewing on SEC Network + with Will Johnson and Mark Johnson on the call. SEC Network + provides digital-only events to SEC Network subscribers through WatchESPN and the ESPN app on smartphones, computers, tablets and connected devices (Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox 360 and Xbox One). All three games will air on SportsRadio 1150/102.7 The Zone.
