Aggies Sweep Yale with 10-2 Sunday Win
Mar 06, 2016 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies used a nine-run seventh inning to complete a three-game series sweep of the Yale Bulldogs with Sunday's 10-2 win on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Trailing 2-1, Texas A&M (11-1) used a miscue by the Yale catcher to start their explosive seventh. Michael Barash struck out swinging, but Alex Boos was unable to hold on to strike three and Barash bolted to first on the passed ball.
Ryne Birk immediately made Yale pay for the free runner. After Birk failed to get a sacrifice bunt down, he thumped a 2-2 pitch into the visitors bullpen down the rightfield line for a two-run home run, giving A&M its first lead of the game.
Ronnie Gideon followed with his second double of the game. Alan Campero pinch-ran for Gideon and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, J.B. Moss singled through the left side of the infield, to send Campero home. After Moss stole second, Choruby plated him by bouncing a single up the middle for a 5-2 lead. Choruby stole second base and Boomer White drew seven-pitch walk. Hunter Melton knocked the wheels of Yale's wagon with a two-run double. Barash and Joel Davis sandwiched RBI singles around a run-scoring triple by Birk to inflate the Aggies' cushion to 10-2.
Yale (0-3) took its first lead of the series scratching out a run in the top of the second. Nate Adams started the frame by slapping a single to rightfield and moved to second on a wild pitch. A pickoff attempt by Kyle Simonds went to the right of second baseman Birk allowing Adams to move third. Alex Boos knocked Adams in, chopping an infield single over the reach of third baseman Boomer White.
The Aggies put an equalizer on the board in the bottom of the third. Birk laced a single through the right side of the infield and scored when Gideon crushed a ball to leftfield past the glove of a diving Tom Ruddy for an RBI double.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. Richard Slenker was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After Adams struck out swinging, Harrison White bounced a ball up the middle that destined to result in an inning-ending double play, but Simonds made a stab at it and it caromed off his glove and through the right side of the infield for a single, putting runners on the corners. White was picked off at first, but stayed in the rundown long enough to allow Slenker to slink home for the go-ahead run.
Simonds did not factor in the decision on the mound. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in 4.0 innings.
Turner Larkins (1-0) earned the win in relief for A&M. He allowed two hits, but had two pickoffs and fanned one in 3.0 innings of scoreless work.
Kumar Nambiar (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Yale. He allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit while striking out one in 1.0 innings of work. Starter Chasen Ford put forth a solid effort, yielding just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out two in 5.0 innings.
Birk led the Aggies at the plate, going 4-for-4 with one triple, one home run, three runs and three RBI. Gideon, Melton and Moss each added two hits.
Yale was paced by Adams and White with two hits apiece.
Texas A&M returns to action Tuesday with a 6:30 pm contest against the Northwestern State Demons on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

Head Coach Rob Childress
On the Game…
"We saved our amazing at-bats for late in the ballgame. We had 10 great at-bats in the seventh inning. It started with an innocent enough strikeout with a passed ball then we strung 10 of them together and we were able pull away from them. Turner Larkins did a great job giving us a chance to come back and win that game with his hold. Then the big boys did what they needed to do at the end of the game."
Junior Infielder Ryne Birk
On the homer after the missed bunt…
"I'm kind of mad at myself for not getting that bunt down. That's a big part of our offense and something really emphasize in practice. You won't hear the end of it in the dugout if you don't get that bunt down and I had to pick myself up. Luckily I got a good swing on the ball and made up for it."
