Aggies Topple Yale 13-0 with President Bush in Attendance
Mar 05, 2016 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Playing in front of a crowd of 7,322 fans that included the 41st President of the United States George H. W. Bush, the No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies rolled to a 13-0 win over the Yale Bulldogs Saturday on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park to clinch the series win.
Prior to the game, President Bush was presented with framed jerseys from each squad and threw a pair of "first pitches", one to each team.
President Bush was a first baseman and captain for the Yale team that played in the first two College World Series in 1947 and 1948. For the game, the Aggies exchanged their traditional maroon and white-based home uniforms for white uniforms trimmed in red and blue in honor of President Bush, whose presidential library is located on the Texas A&M University campus. Additionally, Texas A&M is home to the Bush School of Government and Public Service.
The crowd was the second-largest at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park since the reconstruction prior to the 2012 season.
The Aggies pounced early with a run in the bottom of the first. J.B. Moss led off the inning by lacing a single through the left side of the infield. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on Nick Choruby's sacrifice bunt and scored when Boomer White gapped a single to right-center for the 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M (10-1) added a run in the fourth. Nick Banks started the inning by depositing a single down the rightfield line. He moved to second on a grounder back to the pitcher by Michael Barash and Ryne Birk put runners on the corners with a single to rightfield. Banks came home to score when a pickoff attempt by Scott Politz sailed over the first baseman's head for an error.
The Aggies overwhelmed the Bulldogs with seven runs in the fifth. The rally started with one out, after Moss walked but was caught stealing. Choruby restarted the offense with a walk. The rally included an RBI single by Melton, two-run single by Banks, two-run triple by Birk and a two-run single by Choruby to extend the lead to 9-0.
Texas A&M added two runs in the sixth and one apiece in the seventh and eighth frames.
The loss was hung on Politz (0-1). He allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings.
Tyler Ivey did not get a decision in the contest, but he extended his scoreless inning string to 16.1 frames. He labored through 4.1 scoreless innings, scattering four hits and five walks while striking out five.
Brigham Hill (1-0) earned the win in relief. He entered the game with bases loaded, one out, and A&M holding a precarious 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. He induced a short flyout and ended the frame with a strikeout. He weaved 1.2 scoreless frames, retiring all five batters he faced, including three strikeouts.
Corbin Martin worked the seventh and eighth innings and Cason Sherrod pitched the ninth as the Aggies posted their fifth shutout of the season.
The Aggies had 13 different players log hits and their bench players went 6-for-10 on the day. Birk paced the Aggies at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two triples, two runs and three RBI. Banks, White and Austin Homan added two hits apiece.
Texas A&M will go for the series sweep Sunday with a 12 pm contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
On the presidential audience…
"It was a game I've been looking forward to for a long time. Having Yale here, and President Bush with his alma mater. The crowd we had today and the weather was really something. I'm sure it was special for him and it was definitely special for the 8,000 or so people who were here today. It will be something our players will remember for a long time. I really wanted a picture of the two teams together with President Bush. I'm sure it's one that every one of those guys wants a copy of to put on their wall."
On the pitching…
"You know Tyler (Ivey) didn't really have his greatest stuff today in the command. But, I thought he battled really well. In the fifth inning there was a big swing and we went to our bullpen and Brigham (Hill) came in and really changed the complexion of the game by hanging that zero up there. If Yale had gotten a hit there it would have been game on. I'm really proud of Brigham for his performance in that spot. That let the offense to come in and put the game out of reach."
Junior Outfielder Nick Banks
Thoughts on the experience…
"Just coming out and being in front of the 41st President, it's just a special moment to get to be around. For us to come out and have the day we did, playing within ourselves, 13 runs on 18 hits, it just pretty special.""
Junior Infielder Ryne Birk
On the special occasion…
"It was a real honor just to get to shake 41's hand. It was a packed house today and it was just a really special event to be a part of."
On hitting two triples….
"I haven't had a triple this year, and got a couple right there. But, overall it was just a good team win. The bullpen pitched their butts off and we had lots of hits. It was a big win for us. Somedays you are going to go 0-for-4 and sometimes you'll have a day like today. It's just how baseball works. You got to keep a level head and can't get up can't get down too much."
