Mar 26, 2016 | Men's Swimming and Diving
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team finished No. 25 in the final team standings at the 2016 NCAA Championships, which concluded on Saturday at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatics Center.
The Aggies scored a total of 20 points over the four-day competition with three swimmers or divers earning All-America honors with top 16 finishes. The top five teams were Texas (541.5 points), California (351.0), Florida (334.0), NC State (314.0) and Georgia (239.5). Texas A&M was one of eight Southeastern Conference teams that earned spots in the top 25.
Texas A&M earned final-day points from sophomore swimmer Mauro Castillo Luna and sophomore diver Tyler Henschel.
Castillo Luna, from Zacatecas, Mexico, lowered his own school record in the 200-yard breaststroke while finishing 10th in a time of 1:54.35. His old school record was 1:54.64 from the SEC Championships in February.
"Mauro knew he needed to swim well for the team to finish in the top 25 and he responded to the pressure with a school record," Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. "It was great swim and great effort, and it was a lot of fun to watch."
Henschel, from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, chipped in a 16th place finish in the platform dive with a score of 283.80. Henschel just missed qualifying for the Championship final with a 9th-place finish in the prelims with a 379.50 point total.
