Aggies Roll to Sweep of Fresno State with 12-1 Win

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 3 Texas A&M Aggies (15-1) scored early and often Sunday, winning 12-1 and earning the three-game sweep of the Fresno State Bulldogs (11-5) on Blue Bell Park at Olsen Field.
Senior Kyle Simonds, making his fourth start of the season, (3-0) was excellent on the mound, keeping Fresno in check all afternoon. In his 7.0 innings of work he allowed just three hits, two walks while adding three strikeouts. The only run he allowed was unearned, coming in the fifth inning.
In the first, J.B. Moss and Walker Pennington got the game started with back-to-back doubles. After a couple walks, Michael Barash made the score 2-0 with an RBI groundout. Ryne Birk pushed the lead to four runs with a two-run single.
In the second, A&M kept the foot on the gas against Fresno State starter Anthony Arias (2-1), scoring two more and chasing him from the ball game. For the second inning in a row, a couple of doubles aided in the scoring, with another one from Moss and one from Jonathan Moroney.
The Maroon and White offense kept on adding runs as the game went along in bringing the score to 12-1 after seven frames. Nick Banks had the big hit in the fourth with a two-out triple and it was White's bases loaded walk that sent a runner home in the fifth. The next runs came via a pinch-hit home run from Joel Davis, the first dinger of his Aggie career. In the seventh, Hunter Melton became one of the 10 Aggies to record a hit in the ballgame when he recorded an RBI single.
Corbin Martin and Turner Larkins worked the final two innings for the Aggies to finish off the win. The victory put a lid on the sweep of a Bulldogs team that came into the series with an 11-2 record on the season. Altogether Aggie pitching surrendered just three hits in the ballgame.
Moss put together a four-hit performance with two doubles and three runs raising his season average to .417. The Aggies other above-.400 hitter, White, went 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs and two RBI. Banks also had a nice day getting on board in three of his four plate appearances with two walks and a triple
Texas A&M will look to add to their 10-game win streak Tuesday with a 6:30 pm rivalry renewal against the Texas Longhorns on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

On Kyle Simonds' performance…
"I felt like he had a good bullpen this week, and it carried over to the game. He commanded the baseball really well today much like he did at Pepperdine. I know he was shaky his first two starts here at home, but he was really good today. It's a good feeling going into conference play knowing that we have got three quality starts this weekend. All three are going to give us a chance."
On J.B. Moss and today's performance…
"From the word 'go', he hits a double. Walker Pennington steps up and takes an eight-pitch at-bat. From that point on, it was 'game on' from an offensive stand point. We had a lot of stressful baseball this week with three one-run games. It was nice to come out, grab the lead early and continue to build on it."

On starting out strong compared to first two games…
"I don't know if we did anything different than the first two games. We just tried to set a positive tone at the beginning of the game. The first two games have been one-run games, so I think it was important for us, after Kyle got off to a good night pitching, that we got off to a good note offensively. We were able to do that today."

On the offensive output behind him…
"From the word 'go' in the bottom half of the first inning, hitters got after it and smothered their pitching and defense. I really set the tone for the whole game for us."
On his pitching…
"Each week, Coach Childress and I just go to work. We're ironing some things out, trying to get back to some of the mechanics that I was using in the fall. Each week there's something we tweak and get back to mechanic wise. Other than that, it's just competing on the mound."
