Aggies Record Back-to-Back Shutouts for First Time Since 2006
Feb 28, 2016 | Baseball
MALIBU, California – Aggie pitchers Tyler Ivey and Jace Vines stymied the Pepperdine batters Sunday as the No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies posted a 4-0 victory over the Waves to take the rubber match of the series from the Waves.
The Aggies recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2006 season. Texas A&M pitchers held Pepperdine to five hits in the last two games of the series while striking out 24 Waves.
Ivey (2-0) continued a stellar start to his rookie campaign, scattering three hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings of work. Vines retired all nine batters he faced to pick up the save, including two strikeouts.
For the third time in the series, the Texas A&M (7-1) drew first blood. On Sunday the Aggies broke the scoring seal in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Boomer White legged out a chopper down the third base line for an infield single. J.B. Moss followed by hammering a two-run home run over the leftfield fence. After Ryne Birk was retired on the base paths, Hunter Melton launched a solo dinger to stake the Maroon and White to a 3-0 lead.
After stranding two runners in the second, third and sixth innings, the Aggies finally added an insurance run in the ninth. Ronnie Gideon bounced a single up the middle and was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Austin Homan. Homan moved to second on a sacrifice
Melton led the Aggie charges at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, one run and one RBI. White batted 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Pepperdine starter Chandler Blanchard (1-0) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 innings.
Texas A&M returns to action Tuesday when the Aggies host the Houston Baptist Huskies in a 6:30 pm contest on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
On the road series win…
"I'm very proud of our team. They should a lot of toughness after losing on Friday. They came back and won on Saturday and Sunday in dominating fashion. It all starts on the mound and defensively. We pitched at an extremely high level and played great defensively. It may not have shown on the scoreboard with the run total, but we put pressure on them all day today and it's been 18 straight innings of a relentless approach at the plate the last two days.
On Tyler Ivey and Jace Vines…
They were both fantastic. Ivey certainly hasn't pitched like a freshman this season. He threw four pitches for strikes and got the key punch outs when they were threatening. Vines was electric. He was 90 to 94 with power sink. He pounded the zone and got them on swing. He went nine up, nine down.
Senior outfielder J.B. Moss
On his first inning home run…
"It was actually a hit and run, but I think somebody missed a sign. It was a fastball in and I was just trying to get on top of it and it ended up being a line drive out of the yard.
On Ivey and Vines…
"They pound the zone and they have good tempo and pace. We're able to play great defense behind them because of the tempo and pace.
