Nov 02, 2015 | Football
PHILADELPHIA – Texas A&M sophomore defensive end Myles Garrett (Arlington, Texas) was named a semifinalist for the 2015 Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the college defensive player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club.
Garrett, who is the only sophomore among the 20 semifinalists, might be the nation's most disruptive player with 10.5 quarterback sacks (No. 2 in FBS), 15.5 tackles for loss (tNo. 3) and five forced fumbles (tNo. 1) through eight games. Garrett also ranks as the Aggies' top defensive line tackler with 44 tackles, including 30 solo stops. Garrett fills out his stat line with seven QB hurries, an interception, a blocked punt and two batted down passes.
Garrett is seeking to become Texas A&M's second winner of the Bednarik Award. Hall of Fame linebacker Dat Nguyen won the 1998 Bednarik Award after leading the Aggies to their lone Big 12 Conference championship.
The winner of the 21st Chuck Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 10, 2015 from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Three finalists will be announced on November 24, 2015 and a second round of voting will take place at that time.
