Tournament Website
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M went a combined 11-2 in singles and doubles on the first day of the USTA/Texas Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. All seven singles victories were in straight sets, while the two losses were each decided by two points in a third-set super tiebreaker.
"It was definitely a good start to the tournament," A&M first-year head coach Mark Weaver said. "There were a lot of matches being played today, and just to leave here with lots of wins and only two losses, which were super tiebreakers that could have easily gone either way, so we'll definitely take it. We were fortunate to get the matches in. The weather made for some tricky conditions. There were some tough winds out there, but I felt like for the most part the girls competed well and kept their composure and dealt with the conditions. It was a long day, and they handled everything pretty well."
Five Aggies have advanced to the singles round of 32. Senior Anna Mamalat won her first two rounds to advance. Senior Stefania Hristov, juniors Rutuja Bhosale and Saska Gavrilovska and freshman Domenica Gonzalez all had first-round byes and won their second-round matches to reach the round of 32.
Sophomore Eva Paalma opened with a win in the round of 128 but then fell, 11-9, in a super tiebreaker to Seda Arantekin of TCU in the round of 64. Senior Ines Deheza will compete in the consolation round tomorrow after falling to Angeles de los Rios of UTA, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, to open the tournament.
A&M went 4-0 in doubles with Mamalat and Bhosale winning two matches to advance to the round of 16. Deheza and Hristov and Gavrilovska and Gonzalez had first-round byes and picked up wins in the round of 32 to advance.
Friday's matches get underway at 8 a.m., and admission is free. The tournament continues through Monday, with the singles and doubles champions advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 12-15, in Flushing, N.Y.
