Justin Moore threw 6 1/3 solid innings and Coby Mavroulis went 3-for-3 and scored four runs to lead No. 12 Texas A&M to a 8-4 win over UCLA in front of 550 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
With the win, the Aggies moved to 13-2 and evened the three-game series at one game each. The Bruins dropped to 11-4. The series concludes on Sunday, March 7, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. (CST).
UCLA took the lead in the bottom of the first by scoring two unearned runs off A&M starter Justin Moore. With two outs and runners on first and second, Matt Thayer hit a routine groundball to short, which was booted by Cliff Pennington. Pennington's throw to second sailed into right field, allowing both runners to score.
The Aggies scored an unearned run of their own in the top of the second to cut the UCLA lead to 2-1. Mavroulis walked, advanced to second when Austin Boggs reached on an error and moved to third on a ground out by Brian Bowe. Briuns' starting pitcher Brian Beck balked, allowing Mavroulis to trot home.
Brett McMillan hit his third homer of the season in the bottom of the third to increase UCLA's lead to 3-1.
The Aggies took their first lead of the series in the top of the fourth. John Infante doubled and Mavroulis and Boggs were hit by Beck to load the bases. Brian Bowe grounded out, moving all three runners up a station, before Justin Ruggiano delivered a two-out double to left center to push a pair of runs across and give the Aggies a 4-3 lead.
The double chased Beck (1-1) from the game. Beck lasted 3.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits. He struck out two but hit two men and balked twice.
Cory Patton grounded into a double play in the top of the fifth, but it scored Erik Schindewolf to push the A&M lead to 5-3. Schindewolf walked to start the inning and moved to third on a single to right by Pennington.
Austin Boggs hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth. The home run also scored Mavroulis, who singled earlier in the inning, to make the score 7-3.
Jason Meyer replaced Moore with one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh. Meyer struck out the first two men he faced to end the threat.
Moore (2-0) allowed three runs - one earned - and struck out one UCLA hitter to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Mavroulis collected his third hit of the game when he led off the top of the eighth with his second home run of the season.
Meyer allowed a single run in the bottom of the ninth, but finished the game to earn his second save of the season.
