Texas A&M exploded for five runs in the top of the 11th inning as the 9th-ranked Aggies defeated Texas State 10-5 Tuesday evening before 2,495 fans at Dell Diamond.
With the win A&M improved to 24-6 while the Bobcats fell to 15-13.
Erik Schindewolf led off the 11th with a single through the right side of the infield off reliever Chris Jean. Travis Bartek dropped a bunt in front of the plate to move Schindewolf to second and reached safely on an error by Jean. After Cliff Pennington moved the runners into scoring position with another sacrifice bunt and Austin Boggs was intentionally walked to load the bases, Andrew Baldwin lined a base hit off the glove of third baseman Kyle Anson and down the left field line to plate two runs. John Infante followed with a single up the middle to score two more and a sacrifice fly by Coby Mavroulis ended the scoring for the inning.
Aggie closer Blake Rampy (2-0) retired 10 of the 11 men he faced to - three by way of strikeout - to earn the win.
The Aggies took the lead in the top of the second when they scored two runs off Texas State starting pitcher Paul Schappert. Brain Bowe singled to start the inning and moved to third on Cory Patton's single to left. Bowe scored and Patton moved to second on a ground out by Eric Scheidt and Kevin Whelan drove in Patton with a single to left.
Texas State scratched a run across in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-1. Matt Miller, Mark Cooper and Anson all singled to start the inning. Anson's single scored Miller before A&M starter Robert Ray retired the next three men he faced to prohibit any further damage in the inning.
Texas A&M capitalized on a Bobcat error in the top of the fifth to push a run across and stretch its lead to 3-1. Schindewolf led off with a bunt single. Schappert fielded a ground ball by Cliff Pennington and his attempt to get the lead runner at second sailed into centerfield, allowing both runners to advance a base. Austin Boggs later plated Schindewolf with a groundout to short.
The Bobcats scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to chase Ray and take the lead 4-3. RBIs by Miller, Anson and Richard Martinez did the damage.
Nolan Mast, who doubled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch from A&M reliever Austin Creps to increase the Bobcats lead to 5-3.
Brian Hurley replaced Shappert to start the seventh and allowed a lead double to Schindewolf, who scored on consecutive wild pitches to cut the A&M deficit to a run.
The Aggies tied the game with a single run in the eighth. With one out, Bowe tripled down the right field line and Patton followed that with a single through the right side that scored pinch runner John Infante.
Ray lasted 4.2 innings and was tagged for four runs on nine hits, while striking out five.
Schappert was lifted after six innings of work. He allowed three runs - two earned - on five A&M hits.
Schindewolf finished the game going 4-for-5 with a double.
Texas A&M returns to action on Wednesday when they host Texas-San Antonio. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
