Craig Stinson went 3-for-4 with four RBI, including the game-winner in the top of the ninth, to lead No. 9 Texas A&M past Baylor, 8-7, before 3,449 fans at the Baylor Ballpark.
With the game tied at seven and two outs in the top of the ninth, pinch hitter Todd Stroud was hit by a Ryan LaMotta (0-2) pitch. Travis Bartek, who was pinch running for Stroud, advanced to third on a single by Andrew Baldwin. Stinson delivered an infield single in the hole between short and third to plate Bartek and give the Aggies the lead.
Blake Rampy retired the first man in the ninth and then gave way to Jason Meyer, who retired the Bears' three and four-hole hitters to end the game. Meyer earned his third save of the season.
Rampy (1-0) threw 3.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs and only two hits to earn the first win of his career.
With win, the Aggies improved to 21-4 overall and to 1-2 in Big 12 play. Baylor dropped to 8-14 and 2-1 in league action.
Stinson gave the Aggies a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when he slammed a three-run home run over the wall in left off Baylor starter Trey Taylor. Stinson's second dinger of the season also scored Eric Scheidt, who reached on an error, and Baldwin, who singled.
A&M stretched its lead to five runs in the top of the third. Scheidt delivered an RBI single and Baldwin doubled to score the Aggies' fifth run of the game.
Baldwin's double chased Taylor, who allowed six hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Baylor touched A&M starter Kyle Marlatt for three runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Aggie lead to 5-3. Reid Brees and Jared Clements started the inning with singles and Kevin Sevigny followed with an RBI double. Consecutive sacrifice flies from Michael Griffin and Kyle Reynolds did the rest of the damage.
Baylor touched three A&M pitchers for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game. Griffin singled a run home and Paul Will perfectly executed a squeeze bunt to tie the game at five. Marlatt intentionally walked Josh Ford before giving way to Dan Donaldson, who walked the only man he faced to load the bases.
Blake Rampy entered the game and surrendered a two-RBI single to Mike Pankratz that made the score 7-5.
An RBI single by Erik Schindewolf in the top of the sixth scored Stinson, who doubled to lead off the inning, and cut the Baylor lead to one run.
Cory Patton started the seventh with a triple and scored on a RBI double by Scheidt to tie the game at seven.
Scheidt and Baldwin each finished the game with three hits as well.
The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, March 23, when they host the defending national champion Rice Owls. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Olsen Field.
