No. 14 Texas A&M remained undefeated in the Domino's Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic and on the 2004 season with an 11-10 victory over New Mexico Saturday afternoon, but the Aggies' unblemished record was challenged until outfielder Cory Patton's ninth-inning double scored Parker Dalton, ending the game.
New Mexico drew first blood, scoring a run in the top of the first, but Texas A&M answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.
After two scoreless frames, the Lobos struck back with four runs in the top of the fifth, chasing Aggie starting pitcher Dan Donaldson from the game. Donaldson went four-and-one-third innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and striking out five batters. He did not give up a walk.
The Ags failed to answer in the bottom half of the fifth, and New Mexico tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and appeared poised to hand the Aggies their first loss of the season. However, A&M rallied to take the lead, 9-7, in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on two hits and one Lobo error.
Again, New Mexico battled back, taking a 10-9 advantage with three runs in the top of the eighth.
After Eric Scheidt struck out to open the bottom half of the eighth, Coby Mavroulis drew a walk and promptly stole second. Andrew Baldwin singled to advance Mavroulis to third, and Austin Boggs' fielder's choice scored Mavroulis for the tying run. Kevin Whelan flied out to center to end the inning.
Closer Austin Creps sat the Lobos down in order in the top of the ninth to give the Aggies a chance to win the game in the bottom of the frame.
After Dalton doubled to center, Cliff Pennington popped up his bunt attempt to the pitcher, and the Lobos chose to intentionally walk John Infante to try to set up a potential double-play. Patton quickly put an end to the Lobos' hopes, doubling to center and scoring Dalton to win the game.
Texas A&M will now face Arkansas in the nightcap of the Domino's Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic at 7 p.m. Saturday. In the day's opener, Arkansas defeated New Mexico 13-3. On Friday, New Mexico defeated Arkansas 3-1, and Texas A&M beat both Arkansas and New Mexico 7-5 and 2-1, respectively.
