Zach Jackson threw six strong innings and Cory Patton delivered three hits and three RBI to lead No. 21 Texas A&M past South Alabama, 13-3, in front of 4,524 fans at Olsen Field.
Jackson improved to 2-0, striking out three and allowing only one run in his first outing since his opening day no-hitter.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 5-0 while South Alabama dropped to 0-1.
The Aggies jumped on Jaguars starter Bert Heath for four runs in the bottom of the first. Cliff Pennington tripled to right center and scored on Cory Patton's single up the middle. With two outs and Patton still on first, Andrew Baldwin and John Infante singled and Justin Ruggiano doubled to right to do the rest of the damage.
A&M chased Heath in the second when they scored six more runs on seven hits to make the score 10-0. Austin Boggs, Erik Scindewolf and Pennington each singled to start the inning and load the bases. Patton delivered a two-RBI double, Baldwin's single scored two runs and Ruggiano and Craig Stinson each had an RBI single.
Heath (0-1) lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits.
Guillermo Martinez singled to score Michael Cart in the top of the third to cut the A&M lead to 10-1.
Coby Mavroulis singled in the bottom of the third to plate Patton, who singled earlier in the inning, to make the score 11-1. After Mavroulis's hit, every player in the A&M lineup had collected at least one safety on the afternoon.
Baldwin plated a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Kevin Whelan scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make the score 13-1.
B.J. Boening threw the seventh and eighth for Texas A&M, allowing two runs on just one hit.
Tyler Soeder fanned a pair of Jaguar hitters and retired three of the four men he faced in the ninth to end the game.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21. First pitch will be thrown at 3 p.m. at Olsen Field.
