URBANA, Ill. – Less than 24 hours after capping Texas A&M’s historic national runner-up finish in the team portion of the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship, Aggie seniors Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Nazari Urbina took to the courts today to begin competition in the NCAA Singles Championship at the Kahn Outdoor Tennis Complex.

The matches were delayed two-and-a-half hours due to rain, but Sanchez-Quintanar made quick work of 55th-ranked Courtney Collins once the two finally took to the court, defeating the Memphis Tiger, 6-3, 6-1.

It was the 40th win of the season for the Spaniard, who is A&M’s first two-time All-American after receiving a school-record high No. 4 seed in this year’s 64-player field. A quarterfinalist in 2012, Sanchez-Quintanar now advances to the second round to face 19th-ranked Maho Kowase of Georgia, Thursday at noon.

Urbina, A&M’s first four-time participant in the prestigious tournament, received a tough draw in the opening round as she was pitted against No. 2 seed Sabrina Santamaria of Southern California. Santamaria won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Urbina, who was named to the NCAA Championship all-tournament team at No. 3 singles and went 5-0 throughout the team tournament, concludes her illustrious career 102-32, ranking third in the A&M records for most career wins.

In addition to Sanchez-Quintanar, A&M’s 18th-ranked doubles team of freshman Stefania Hristov and junior Cristina Stancu will be in action on Thursday as they being play in the NCAA Doubles Championship. They face No. 5-8 seed and ninth-ranked Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie of Oklahoma with first serve slated for 1 p.m.
