Weekly Press Conference Selected Quotes

Dec. 4, 2012 ● Reed Arena

Texas A&M Men's Basketball Head Coach Billy Kennedy

Opening Statement:

"We've got a big game against Stephen F. Austin, a very good team. They're undefeated. They're coming off an 18-point win at Tulsa. We have to have the same emotion and energy we had against Houston to beat a very good team."

On the win against Houston:

"I was really impressed with our post guys. They were very good on both ends of the court. It was a great environment for a game. I was proud of our guys for not playing scared. I thought when we played Saint Louis we had some guys that were passive on the offensive end."

"Good experience and good scheduling helps [when playing better teams]. Just building some confidence in the role that they're in now. It's just going to take time. There will be freshmen moments and moments of inexperience throughout the year. We played like a veteran team against Houston. We played well during the week and we played well on Saturday. That hasn't always happened."

On the transfer players adjusting:

"Sometimes it takes a year or so. Defense and the speed of the game is a big adjustment for them. Both Andrew Young and Fabyon Harris were the main offense on their teams last year. Both of them scored a lot of points at that (junior college) level. We would love for them to score all those points but they've got to play defense too. They need to learn to play unselfishly. That takes time."

On what he likes about his team and what needs to be improved on:

"Our overall team attitude and competitiveness is what I like best. When you bring in a bunch of new guys and guys that didn't have a lot of experience last year takes time to get them to gel. The enthusiasm is what I like best. My main concern is perimeter depth and interior rebounding by our post players. Those are two areas that we'll have to improve on down the stretch."

On the benefits of classes finishing:

"We'll have ten days to try and improve and get some practices in. We still have to improve on the fundamentals of the game: rebounding the ball; taking care of the ball. For everybody, this time of the year is crucial. This is our opportunity to get better as a team and we're looking forward to it."

On Alex Caruso:

"He's been unbelievable for a freshman with his maturity and understanding how to play. Most freshmen don't want to lock in defensively. He's made an emphasis to try and be better defensively. It bothers him when somebody scores on him. It bothers him when he messes up on the defensive end. Coming in we knew he was a really good passer. I've been real pleased with him. We put him in the starting lineup last game and he really helped us. He had six assists in the first half. That's unusual for anybody, let alone a freshman. That was special."

On Stephen F. Austin

"Hopefully, our guys respect how good they are. They play an entirely different style. They make you guard them for 35 seconds on the shot clock and are extremely well-coached and disciplined on the floor. If we think this is going to be an easy game we'll be in trouble. It's a total contrast from playing Houston who would try and get up and down like we do. This is a big game. I'm concerned because we're playing a very good team and they're coming in here with the thought that they can win. They're holding people to 44 points per game and have won two road games already. Hopefully, we'll come out and give them the respect that they deserve."
