COLLEGE STATION, Texas -No. 16/13 Texas A&M will
face it third consecutive top ten opponent early in the 2012-2013 season as
they host No.2/2 Connecticut Sunday afternoon at Reed Arena. The Aggies fell to
No. 9/9 Penn State at home on Wednesday 63-58. Connecticut won its home opener
103-39 last Sunday.
The contest will be televised nationally by ESPN2, this
will be the second television appearance for Texas A&M this season. Check
your local listings or with your cable provider for availability in your area.
The Aggies (0-2) are at the end of a daunting three game
stretch of top-ten opponents, the first time in program history that the Aggies
have faced such a stretch. Texas A&M opened the season with a
back-to-back losses for the first time since the 1999 season, and the first
time in the Gary Blair era.
Junior Kelsey Bone her strong early season play with
her second double-double in as many games, with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The
double-double was Bone's 16th of her career, she was 7-of-11 from the floor and
2-of-4 from the free throw line in 36 minutes of play. Junior Karla Gilbert was
the only other Aggie in double figures scoring with ten points and six rebounds
in 17 minutes off the bench. Senior Kristi Bellock added six points and ten
rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
The Huskies are led by pre-season All-Big East first
team selections Stefanie Dolson, Bria Hartley and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and
return three starters from last year's 33-5 squad that reached the Final Four.
Connecticut opened the season last Sunday with a 103-39 win at home, led
by freshman Breanna Stewart 21 points in 23 minutes of play.
Mosqueda-Lewis added 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-10 from
Connecticut and Texas A&M's only previous meeting was
last season at the XL Center, the Huskies prevailed 81-51 on December 6, 2011
in last year's Jimmy V Classic. The Aggies were led by Tyra White with 14
points, Adrienne Pratcher added 9 points in the loss.
