KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -
Texas A&M senior women's golfer Mary Michael Maggio shot two-under-par
during the third round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, hosted by
Tennessee, to place third individually in the tournament.
"I'm proud of the girls for hanging in there today,"
Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "Usually, if you shoot three-over
you can move up in the field. Today we had it going early and just couldn't
finish it off. They never gave up and I've very proud of them for that.
Conditions got tough out there but that shouldn't affect our play."
This is the second weekend in a row in which Maggio has
placed in the top five individually at a tournament. The previous weekend
Maggio shot three-under par to win the Liz Murphey Intercollegiate. This
weekend, Maggio carded three birdies to record a three-day score of 213 (-3).
Fellow Aggie senior Sarah Beth Davis finished in a tie for 15th with
a score of 219 (+3). Sophomore Patricia Garcia and junior Chelsea Mocio both
had final scores of 224 (+8), while junior Natalie Reeves rounded out the
A&M contingency with a score of 229 (+13).
"I've very proud of Trip (Maggio) for another top-five
finish this week," McCombs added. "She's probably the toughest player I've had
the privilege of coaching. I'm also proud of Chelsea although she didn't finish
the round like she would have wanted; she turned in her first under-par round
as an Aggie. She had a great last two days for us. Sarah also had a very good
tournament with a top-15 finish. She hit some really great shots and if she
could have gotten her putter hot in the least bit, she would have shot really
low all three rounds."
As a team, the Aggies placed fifth with a score of 876
(+12). Penn State won the tournament with a score of 867 (+3), and Tennessee
(+7), Purdue (+8) and Northwestern (+10) followed sequentially. Coming in sixth
was UTSA (+16), while Iowa State (+22), Florida State (+30), Furman (+33),
Mississippi State (+39), East Carolina (+50), Miami (+54), James Madison (+56),
Chattanooga (+58), Memphis (+79) and Eastern Kentucky (+108) brought up the
The Aggies will appear next at the Alamo Invitational in
San Antonio on Oct. 28-30. Live scoring for the event will be available at
