The traditions of Athletic Training at Texas A&M University have a great history. Athletic Training at Texas A&M began around 1934 with coaches who cared for the injured athletes. One of the classic treatments involved rubbing a coke bottle over the injured area. However, Texas A&M University was quick to evolve through the many changes, being one of the first universities in the nation to purchase an ultrasound unit in 1954.

During that period, the university employed and would continue to produce some of the finest Athletic Trainers in the associations' history. The athletic training program at Texas A&M University boasts four National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame inductees: Lilbum J. Dimmitt, Charles E. Harper, Oliver William Dayton, and Wilford "Billy" Pickard, Jr. The university's first Athletic Trainer, "Lil" Dimmitt, was inducted in 1962. Charles "Smokey" Harper was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966, while serving on staff at Texas A&M University. Oliver "Bill" Dayton, a founding father of the NATA, was inducted in 1981. Wilford "Billy" Pickard Jr., inducted in 1985, and was Head Athletic Trainer at his alma mater, Texas A&M University, from 1965-1982.

Becoming and Aggie is not a one-time occurrence; it's an all-time commitment.
