COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M soccer team played its annual Maroon and White Game Monday, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the Maroon team. The match consisted of two 20-minute halves and was followed by a team shootout.
Freshman Bianca Brinson netted both goals for Maroon. The first came in the 10th minute when junior Chelsea Jones attacked the White goal and kicked a laser from 10 yards. Maroon goalie stand-in Daniel Easley punched the ball out as he dove to his left, but Brinson was waiting in the box and pounced with a goal from the right.
Maroon got another look at scoring in the 15th minute when freshman Katie Perry's free kick from the top of the box landed in the hands of the goalie, on frame. A corner kick by Jones entered the field of play in perfect position for a header by Maroon sophomore Rachel Lenz half a minute later, but Lenz's shot was also saved.
Brinson's second goal was assisted by junior Lyndsey Gnatzig, who dribbled into Maroon's attacking half and passed to the Austin, Texas, native just feet from where she first scored. Brinson snuck the ball into the net for a 2-0 Maroon lead in the 16th minute.
White narrowly missed a chance to retaliate with just 30 seconds left in the first period when junior Nora Skelton crossed the goal with a pass to freshman Annie Kunz. Kunz slammed a shot at the frame where the Maroon goalie, freshman Jordan Day, dove for her first save of the match.
In the second period, freshman Shea Groom collected a cross from Brinson in the 26th minute and headed it just wide of the post in an attempt to add another goal to Maroon's tally.
White appeared determined to make a comeback in the second half, with redshirt junior Katie Hamilton leading the attack.
The Spring, Texas, native kicked a bomb from the top of the box in the 36th minute. Day got her hands on it before it sunk into the net, however, and picked up her second save of the match. Two minutes later freshman Kelley Monogue tried another kick for White, from 30 yards. The zinger was again snagged by Day in goal.
With just over a minute left in the match, Hamilton struck again. The 25-yard shot forced Day to dive for her fourth and final save of the match as the Maroon team outscored White, 2-0.
