BRYAN, Texas - The No. 4 Texas A&M equestrian team (1-2, 0-2 SEC) hosts 10th-ranked SMU (3-1) in a hunter seat competition before matching up with No. 8 TCU (2-0) in Western later in the day on Friday at the Brazos Valley Expo Complex. The Aggies and Horned Frogs will also compete in a hunter seat exhibition show.
In the first home meet of the 2012-13 season, the action gets underway at 9 a.m. (CDT) with the equitation over fences competition between the Aggies and the Mustangs. A&M and SMU then finish their hunt seat meet with an 11 a.m. match up in equitation on the flat. The Western competition with TCU will begin at 3 p.m. with horsemanship, followed by reining at 4:45 p.m. The Aggies and Horned Frogs will also compete in a hunt seat exhibition with fences at 3 p.m. and flat at 5 p.m.
"SMU and TCU have always been challenging competitions for us," head coach Tana McKay said. "Both teams are off to a great start this season and we expect an exciting meet on Friday. It's going to be an all-day event with hunt seat competing in the morning and western riding in the afternoon, along with a hunt seat exhibition. Our riders are excited to be back in the home arena for the first time this season among the best fans in the nation."
The Aggies have dropped their last two meets, at No. 1 Georgia and at then-No. 3 Auburn, but return home with seven of a possible 12 MOP awards after just three meets. Senior Laura Brainard has been distinguished twice this season in horsemanship.
Two Aggie seniors have perfect records in the last three meets. Emily Williams is 3-0 in over fences and Emma Myers is undefeated in reining. Both riders have one MOP award.
A&M leads the all-time series with SMU, 5-2, and edges TCU in competition history, 8-1. The Aggies and Mustangs last met in a 2012 hunt seat show that ended with a 6-4 SMU home victory. A&M has defeated TCU in the last four meets, the most recent being a 5-3 A&M win at the BVEC in 2012.
The hunt seat-only Mustangs are 3-1 on the season after defeating Delaware State, Kansas State and Tennessee-Martin. SMU's most recent competition was a 4-6 loss at TCU.
The Horned Frogs are a perfect 2-0 this year, edging New Mexico, 12-6, and taking a 6-4 hunt seat win over SMU. The team makes its first road trip this weekend.
Scoring updates throughout the show will be provided through the team's official twitter feed at twitter.com/AggieEquestrian and will also be available on aggieathletics.com.
