Wheeler, Sweeney Earn SEC Community Service Recognition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Texas A&M swimmers Wes Wheeler and Allyson Sweeney were named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the SEC office announced on Friday. The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all league-sponsored sports to highlight students who give back to their community with superior effort.


Wheeler, a senior from Austin, Texas, is an active student volunteer and has served the community through several campus and community projects. Wheeler has participated in "The Big Event" and the "Aggies Can" canned food drive as a co-chairman. He is also been involved in Hard Hats for Little Heads, ensuring that young people have safety helmets. He assisted in the Twin City Missions coat drive and also spear-headed the swimming and diving team's cleanup of the warehouse used for the coat drive. Wheeler actively works with H.O.S.T., mentoring first-graders on the importance of reading and also volunteers with the Special Olympics. Wheeler is a member of the Texas A&M Student Anti-Hazing Committee and the president of Aggies Athletes Involved (AAI).


Sweeney, a junior from Snellville, Georgia, is also an active student who has involved herself in many service projects in the community. Sweeney has worked with "The Big Event" along with thousands of A&M students in the Bryan/College Station community. She also volunteered at the "Fall Festival" for local elementary schools and coordinated H.O.S.T. for Aggie Athletes Involved - mentoring first-graders on the importance of reading. Sweeney worked at Twin City Missions at the organization's soup kitchen during holiday training with the swimming and diving team. She also enjoys volunteering at many other community service projects including: The Special Olympics, "Aggies Can" canned food drive and Hard Hats for Little Heads. She helps organize events to host young people at various Texas A&M sporting events in conjunction with the Junior Aggie Club and is the Co-Vice President of AAI.
