FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Friday, June 14, 2013

COLLEGE STATION, Texas—In its first season of competition in the Southeastern Conference, the Texas A&M athletics program continues to set the bar higher as it is poised for its best-ever finish in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The Aggies currently stand in 6th place with 1081.50 points. The final rankings will be released upon completion of the College World Series when baseball points will be added.

The SEC is the only conference with three institutions in the current Top 10 with Florida at No. 2, the Aggies at No. 6 and Georgia at No. 9. Six SEC schools are in the Top 25.

“Our first year in the SEC has truly been remarkable, and the success of our student-athletes and coaches has extended into several NCAA Championships,” Texas A&M Director of Athletics Eric Hyman said. “A national championship in men’s outdoor track and field and national runner-up finishes by both women’s tennis and women’s outdoor track and field capped a historic athletics season for Texas A&M. We are looking forward to see where Texas A&M will place in the final rankings.”

Texas A&M is looking at its fourth straight year in the final year-end Top 10 rankings (6th in 2009-10, 8th in 2010-11 and 9th in 2011-12). The top Aggie point total was 1090.75 points in the 2010-11 school year.

The most recent rankings included points for men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, softball, women’s rowing and men’s golf.

The men’s outdoor track and field team won the national championship and earned 95 points while the women’s outdoor track and field squad finished second and brought home 90 points.

The men’s golf team finished in a tie for sixth at the NCAA Championships and earned 69 points. The women’s softball team won the NCAA Regional Championship and advanced to the Super Regionals to finish in ninth place to earn 64 points. Aggie baseball advanced to the NCAA Baseball Regional Championship.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup takes into consideration the top 10 female sports and the top 10 male sports at each institution. In Texas A&M’s case, the school sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, 11 female and nine male.
