COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M athletics program is currently in 10th place in the 2012-13 Division I Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup first spring rankings. The Southeastern Conference is the only conference with three institutions in the current Top 10 with Florida at No. 5 and Georgia at No. 9 to go along with the Aggies at No. 10.

The Aggies have finished in the final year-end Top 10 rankings the past three years (6th in 2009-10, 8th in 2010-11 and 9th in 2011-12).

The most recent rankings included points for rifle, women’s water polo, men’s volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis as well as women’s golf.

The women’s tennis team reached the championship match against Stanford to finish No. 2 in the standings and earn 90 points, while the men’s tennis squad reached the Round of 16 and placed No. 9 to earn 64 points. Women’s golf reached the regional championship and placed No. 34 to earn 38 points.

The remaining Aggie spring sports are poised to make even more noise with men’s and women’s outdoor track and field ranked among the best in the country with the men ranked No. 1 in the land and the women’s team ranked No. 2. Texas A&M has the most entries in both men’s and women’s track and field for the NCAA Championships.

The men’s golf team is competing at the NCAA Championships and is fighting for a spot in the top eight teams that will advance to match-play.

The baseball squad is competing in the NCAA Regional Championships this weekend.

The women’s softball team won the NCAA Regional Championship and advanced to the Super Regionals to face the nation’s top-ranked team.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup takes into consideration the top 10 female sports and the top 10 male sports at each institution. In Texas A&M’s case, the school sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, 11 female and nine male.

The next spring rankings will be released on June 14.
