COLLEGE STATION- Texas A&M women’s basketball showcased strong play from its point guards in its Maroon & White Scrimmage, in front of a lively crowd at Reed Arena.
A&M’s point guards, Jordan Jones and Curtyce Knox, each scored 15 points, which co-led the scrimmage. Jones added five assists to her total while Knox had four assists. Junior college transfer Achiri Ade also co-led the scrimmage with 15 points and had a scrimmage-high 12 rebounds.
“I thought our kids showed a lot of energy at times, and I was pleased with the point guard play,” said Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair. “They were looking to score but still distributed the ball.”
“I also was really impressed with Achiri Ade today, who was very active,” added Blair “She’s everything as advertised.”
“This game is a starting point for us, but this was more of a game for the fans, to let them have a chance to see the new kids, and I think it was good,” said Blair. “This crowd reminded me of the crowd for my first real game at Texas A&M, so I think it’s amazing how much the fan base has grown in 10 years.”
The Maroon took a 17-8 victory in the first period, led by 50% shooting from the field. Jones gave everyone a preview of what was to come in the scrimmage in the first period when she had seven of Maroon’s 17 points, going a perfect 3-3 from the field in the session, including a 3-point heave from 10 feet behind the line.
The second period saw both sides shoot 50%-or-better from the field, with Maroon taking a 21-19 edge in the session. Knox scored seven points in the period.
Blair provided commentary for those in attendance during the Maroon and White sessions of the scrimmage, allowing associate head coach Kelly Bond-White and assistant coach Amy Wright to coach the two sides. In the third period, the Aggies all donned maroon and faced the 12th Man Team, the same men’s practice team that Aggie Wide Receiver Travis Labhart played on before walking on to Kevin Sumlin’s football squad.
The Aggies pulled out a 18-17 victory over the 12th Man Team in the third period, despite trailing with under a minute remaining. Chelsea Jennings, who finished the scrimmage with 10 points, stole a pass and converted a fast-break layup to tie the score at 15, before the 12th Man Team added a basket of their own to take a two point lead. With the clock winding down, Courtney Williams, who had 12 points in the scrimmage, hit a layup-and-one with 4.6 seconds left to win the session.
Maroon pulled out a 20-10 victory in the final session, with Achiri Ade contributing 10 of her 15 points. The scrimmage followed by an autograph session and a Q&A with Coach Blair.
The Aggies return to the court on Nov. 3 against Oklahoma City in an exhibition game at Reed Arena. Texas A&M starts the regular season on Nov. 11 at North Texas.
