Texas A&M Men's Basketball Head Coach Billy Kennedy

Opening Statement:

"Obviously, we were pleased with our Ole Miss performance holding Marshall Henderson to just 10 points. As well as we played defensively against Ole Miss, we didn't play very well defensively against Vanderbilt, allowing them to maintain their lead with 3's, many that were uncontested. The disappointing thing in that game is we just didn't guard. We know we are going to have struggles offensively, but we just didn't guard like we usually do."

On Vanderbilt's play:

"They were a tough matchup. Our post guys didn't go out on the floor and guard well. Rod Odom had four 3's to tie his career high, so we didn't match up well with him. Defensively, our point guard play was as bad as it has been, we had trouble keeping the ball out of the lane and getting beat on dribble penetration. Had we kept them to their average from the 3-point line, there average is six a game, we would have been in great shape."

On coaching from baseline at Vanderbilt:

"Yeah, that is a tough situation. That is my second time coaching there. But everybody has to play there, so you have to adjust to it, but it is a huge advantage for the home team. It's the only place in the country that allows that to happen so when you play there and lose, you recognize the advantages, and the challenges it presents the opponent."

On defensive play and coaching decisions:

"We would have been better off playing small.  We thought we would have had a size advantage offensively one-on-one in the post, and that wasn't the case in that game.  If I had to play them again, I would play small and switch more on the perimeter, and I would also play a little bit more zone if we continue to get beat like that off the dribble."

On up and down nature of team:

"It seems as if it's up and down, but our effort has been consistent during the last ten games, competing wise. I think everything is predicated on making shots, especially when you only have two guys, Fabyon Harris and Elston Turner, who are consistent double figure guys. If they're not shooting the ball well, it puts so much pressure on your defense and it puts so much pressure on your team to score. We just don't have enough balance of offensive scoring power to consistently be good night in and night out. I don't think it's an effort thing. I think our guys are playing hard, I think we are unselfish and our togetherness is solid. I just think there are times were we are not solid enough offensively. That's where the inconsistency comes."

On upcoming Auburn match:

"This is a team that is struggling also. They have lost a number of games in a row but for the most part, they are competitive. This is their third year in the program and they are playing a lot of young guys. They have a really good player in Frankie Sullivan, who is kind of like their Elston Turner. They struggle with the same thing, trying to get consistent scoring from their other guys. It's a game where we are going with the expectation to play well and give ourselves a chance to win. But we have got to play better than we did against Vandy."

On SEC teams struggling on the road:

"I think we have a lot of teams struggling offensively, No. 1, and you don't shoot the ball as well on the road no matter where you go, unless you're a really good team like Florida, who scores in everybody's gym. I think that's one of the biggest things in our league, is about six teams, if you look at our averages, are scoring about 62 points or less. That's a lot of teams not scoring the basketball, and so when you can't score it's hard to win on the road."

On defensive play in conference games:

"We've done a really good job of taking away one scorer. It's the teams that are balanced that have given us some struggles. I like our effort, I think we are competing on the defensive end but we've got to get better play out of our point guards on the defensive end. And also our interior defense, we've been able to hide some of our deficiencies in the post by doubling the post and doing some different things. But it's been good enough to win most nights defensively; not against Vandy, but it's been good enough to win most nights and has given us a chance to be successful. We've lost a lot of close games by not being able to make some shots late or finish games off. We turned the ball over offensively in some games earlier in the season, but defensively we've been solid. You always think you can play better, but we've been pretty consistent on the defensive end."
