John Smith joins the Texas A&M men’s basketball staff for after serving as an assistant last year at Arlington Seguin High School (Texas).
The Arlington Seguin Cougars finished the 2012-13 season with a 33-5 record as Class 4A Regional Finalists, climbing as high as a No. 19 ranking nationally.
Smith spent a season at Garland Lakeview Centennial High School and four seasons at Temple High School which were capped by a class 5A Regional Finals appearance and a 29-8 record in 2010. Smith has worked past basketball camps at Texas A&M for head coaches Billy Kennedy and Mark Turgeon in his six seasons as a high school assistant.
His career started as a student assistant at Northwestern State where he was on staff for back-to-back Southland conference championships in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
After losing the 2005 Southland Conference Tournament championship game, the 2005-06 season saw the Northwestern State Demons have their best season in school history with a 26-8 record. The season concluded with a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after marquee regular season road wins over Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and Oregon State before a victory over Iowa in the first round.
Smith received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State University in 2006 and attended Warren Easton High School in his hometown of New Orleans, LA. Smith is the son of Verlinda Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and John Smith Sr. of Houston, Texas. Currently enrolled in graduate school, Smith is on track to finish his master’s degree in sports managment, education and communication in the fall of 2015.
