Aggies Off to Summer Assignments

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Twenty-four members of the Texas A&M baseball team are partaking in NCAA sanctioned Summer Baseball Leagues across the United States, ranging from Massachusetts to Alaska.

In the Cape Cod League, three Aggies are playing in the state of Massachusetts. The league opens up play on June 12. First basemen Cole Lankford is slated to play for the Brewster Whitecaps and catcher Troy Stein is headed to the Falmouth Commodores. Pitcher and outfielder Daniel Mengden, who will also have tryout for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, has a roster spot on the Cotuit Kettleers.

In the California League, infielder Blake Allemand and pitchers Grayson Long and Corey Ray are all teammates on the San Luis Obispo Blues in California. Allemand went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI playing in his first game on Tuesday. Ray earned a win his first appearance and Long pitched one scoreless inning of relief thus far.

In the Northwoods League, three Aggies are playing for two teams in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Pitcher Matt Kent has made one appearance for the Rochester Honkers, yielding six hits and two runs over 3.0 innings. The southpaw struck out two in that appearance. Pitcher Greg Maisto and outfielder Jonathan Moroney are playing for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. Maisto started three games on the mound, throwing 16.0 innings, posting a 3.93 ERA and 12 strikeouts without a decision. Moroney has not seen action.

Junior pitcher Patrick Michon traveled to Little Falls, New York, to play for the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League. He earned a save in his first outing of the season on Tuesday, striking out two of the batters he faced in a scoreless ninth inning.

In the Alaska Baseball League, pitcher Ty Schlottmann will join the Mat-Su Miners of Palmer, Alaska. The Miners open the season on June 13.

Twelve Aggies are staying closer to home to perform in the Texas Collegiate League.

Pitchers Zach Brashear and Gandy Stubblefield are playing for the Woodlands Strykers. Stubblefield has thrown 2.2 innings, posting a 3.37 ERA and one save.

Outfielder Krey Bratsen will play for the McKinney Marshalls, but has not seen action.

Infielder Drew Featherston and outfielder JB Moss traveled to Victoria to play for the Generals. In his lone game, Moss recorded three walks and scored a run while Featherston is hitting .229 with two doubles and one triple.

Pitchers Jason Freeman, Parker Ray and Rex Hill along with infielder Hunter Melton have stayed in the College Station area to play for the Brazos Valley Bombers out of Bryan. Hill and Freeman have both made appearances on the mound. Hill has pitched 6.0 innings of relief, recording eight strikeouts and a 3.00 ERA. In two appearances, Freeman has thrown four innings, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Melton has seen action in one game, hitting .250 with two runs.

Catcher Mitchell Nau, infielder Logan Taylor and outfielder Jace Statum traveled to Acadiana, Louisiana, to play for the Cane Cutters. Nau is leading the team in hitting with a .400 average, with a double and two RBI in three games. Taylor has posted a .300 average, going 3-for-10 with one double four walks. Statum drew three walks, stole two bases and scored three runs in his first game.
