COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Saska Gavrilovska has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s tennis for the fourth time this season, the Southeastern Conference office announced today. She shares this week’s honor with Eve Repic of Tennessee.
Gavrilovska went 2-0 at No. 2 singles to help lead Texas A&M to a 2-0 week and a perfect 11-0 home record at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The freshman from Serbia rallied for a come-from-behind victory in the last match standing against 91st-ranked Julia Jones of Ole Miss to clinch the Aggies’ 4-3 victory over the Rebels on Friday. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Gavrilovska won the second set, 6-3, to force a decisive third set. Gavrilovska quickly fell behind in the final set, trailing Jones 4-1 before rallying to win five consecutive games to cap a 6-4 win and clinch the team victory.
Gavrilovska cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over senior Alexandra Perper of Mississippi State on Sunday to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead against the Bulldogs. The Aggies went on to shut out Mississippi State, 4-0, to conclude the regular season.
Gavrilovska improved to 16-7 overall in singles and 7-2 in SEC matches, including 5-0 at the No. 2 line.
Next up for the Aggies is the SEC Tennis Tournament, hosted by the University of Missouri. A&M, 17-5 overall, finished in fifth place in the SEC standings with a 10-3 mark -- one game out of three-way tie for second place – and is the No. 5 seed in the 14-team tournament field. The Aggies will face the winner between No. 12 Arkansas and No. 13 Missouri on Thursday, April 17 at 5 p.m. at the Mizzou Tennis Center in Columbia, Mo.
