Aggies Advance at USTA Clay Court Invitational

ORLANDO, Fla. – Texas A&M women’s tennis players went a combined 5-1 on the first day of the USTA Clay Court Invitational today at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Aggies Cristina Stancu, Ines Deheza and Stefania Hristov all had first-round byes in singles and picked up victories in the second round to advance to the round of 16, which begins Friday.

Stancu, coming off a championship run at the ITA Texas Regional earlier this week, continued her winning ways, defeating Mary Haffey, representing the USTA, 6-0, 6-0. It was the seventh consecutive win for the senior from Romania. Stancu will face Alexis Nelson (UTSA) Friday at 7 a.m. (CT) at the Grand Cypress courts.

Ines Deheza held off Raveena Kingsley (UTSA), 7-6 (6), 6-4, and Hristov had a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Laurence Porry of Florida State to advance to the round of 16. Deheza will face Lynn Kiro of Texas Tech, and Hristov will take on Sofia Kenin (USTA) at 7 a.m. in the round of 16.

A&M’s Paula Deheza opened singles play today with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Courtney Griffith of Central Florida in the round of 64 before falling to No. 2 seed and 46th-ranked and Daneika Borthwick of Florida State, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.

In doubles, the Deheza twins defeated Kenin and Mia Horvit (USTA), 8-7 (6) in the opening round of 32. They face Pleun Burgmans and Paula de Man of Auburn at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday in the round of 16.

Stancu and Hristov are the No. 1 seed and begin action tomorrow after receiving a first-round bye. They face Alexis Nelson and Erica Oosterhuat (USTA) Friday at 1:30 p.m. (CT) in the round of 16.

The tournament field features players from Auburn, Central Florida Duke, Florida, host Florida State, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Tulsa and Vanderbilt, as well as top high school players representing the USTA.
