FLUSHING, N.Y. - Texas A&M's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar captured the singles consolation title at the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, defeating Alexa Guarachi of Alabama, 7-6 (4), 7-5 today at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

"The first set against Guarachi today was one of the best sets that I have seen in quite a while," A&M assistant coach Mark Weaver said. "Each girl was playing at the top of her game, and they were hitting winners on almost every point. Cristina served extremely well throughout the match and was able to really raise her game on the big points."

The fourth-ranked Sanchez-Quintanar, who was the No. 2 seed in the tournament after receiving an automatic berth by winning the ITA Texas Regional last month, suffered a loss in the opening round of the tournament but won her next four matches to win the consolation bracket to close out the fall season with a 17-2 record.

"Overall it was a great tournament for Cristina," Weaver said. "The first day was very difficult on her, because she came here with very high expectations and unfortunately it didn't go so well for her against Danielle Lao from USC. Cristina played a total of five matches here and truly got better every match.

"This is a great way for her to end an already excellent fall season. She has a 17-2 record, most of which are against highly ranked national opponents. She really showed great character to overcome a very difficult first day and turn this into a very successful tournament."

Sanchez-Quintanar, a senior from Campo de Criptana, Spain, and the Aggies begin the spring dual match season on January 20 at Rice in Houston.
