COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M junior Jordan Szabo was named the Southeastern Conference men’s tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Szabo’s honor was the second consecutive recognition for an Aggie as Jackson Withrow was named SEC Player of the Week just seven days ago.
The Baywater, Victoria, Australia native clinched Texas A&M’s sweep of Alabama on Friday and finished a perfect 4-0 on the weekend in singles and doubles matches. The pair of singles wins pushed the junior to 5-1 in league singles matches this season. On the weekend Szabo only dropped four games in singles action.
During Friday’s match, Szabo partnered with Jeremy Efferding for an 8-3 win over Hayes Brewer and Andrew Goodwin of Alabama. Returning to the courts Saturday Szabo played alongside freshman Tito Moreiras to defeat Jack Nicholas and Carl Fox of Auburn. The two doubles wins increased Szabo’s league record to 7-0 with a team leading 17 dual-match doubles wins this spring.
Szabo shared the Player of the Week honors with Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee and Garrett Brasseaux of Georgia, marking the first time the league honors were shared by three student-athletes. The SEC also recognized Maxx Lipman and Florida and Jerry Lopez of Kentucky as co-Freshman of the Week.
Szabo and the Aggies look to continue their seven-match conference win streak on the road at Ole Miss Friday before concluding their regular season at Mississippi State Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter for coverage of Texas A&M men’s tennis.
