COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M men’s tennis team fought off the rain for a successful afternoon at the second day of the Texas A&M Conference Challenge at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies went 5-4 in the first round of singles matches but struggled in doubles after the weather delay. First serve for matches on Sunday has been pushed back to 10 a.m.

“It was a good day of tennis for us today,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said after the contests. “We need this tough competition this time of the year to try to get better. The most disappointing thing came tonight in doubles.”

The Aggies top-ranked player, junior Jeremy Efferding at No. 11 in the ITA singles rankings knocked off another ranked foe in Illinois’ 121st-ranked Tom Kopinski, 6-0, 6-3.

A&M’s lone senior, Junior Ore, won his three-set battle with Illinois’ Blake Bazarnik, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in his first contest of the afternoon.

After a dominant singles performance yesterday, junior Jordan Szabo was unable to keep him momentum rolling as he dropped his tough opening match to Ross Guignon of Illinois, 6-1, 6-4.

Shane Vinsant, the No. 56 player in the country was unable to mount a late rally in his first contest of the afternoon, falling to Harvard’s Sebastian Beltrame, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Freshmen Frankie Colunga earned his second victory in an Aggie uniform in his first match on Saturday, winning a thrilling three-set match, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, over Brian Page of Illinois.

Junior Jackson Withrow had a dominant performance in his first match of the day, drilling Brian Yeung, 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Tito Moreiras earned his third victory on the young season with his 6-2, 6-0, win over Julian Childers of Illinois in the first round of matches on Saturday.

After a dominant first set, junior Behzad Minavi couldn’t get into another rhythm, falling in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2, to Kelvin Lam of Harvard.

Junior newcomer Max Montague lost to Harvard’s Conor Haughey, 7-5, 6-2, in the early round of matches.

After a lengthy rain delay, the Maroon and White squeezed in a slate of doubles matches before the day came to an end. The Aggies struggled in pairs play, dropping all four contests on the evening. The third ranked tandem of Ore and Withrow fell in a tiebreaker to Illinois’ No. 56 duo of Hiltzik and Jesse, 8-7 (7). Harrison Adams and Vinsant, the No. 12 ranked pair in the nation suffered a similar fate, falling to Harvard’s combination of Yeung and Hu, 8-7 (2). Efferding and Szabo were unable to mount a rally, falling to Gosea and Bazarnik of Illinois, 8-5. Minavi and Moreiras were never able to find a rhythm against Harvard’s team of Beltrame and Ball, falling 8-3.

The men’s tennis team concludes the Conference Challenge on Sunday. First serve has been pushed back an hour to 10 a.m. To learn more about the men’s tennis team, visit AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieMTEN on Twitter.
