COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M softball team swept Blinn College in a Thursday doubleheader at the Aggie Softball Complex. The Aggies topped the Buccaneers, 10-5, in game one and won a 12-0 shutout in game two.
The doubleheader finished the Aggies’ opponent play for the fall, but the team will play its annual Maroon & White Series next week. The intra-squad scrimmage starts Monday. Check back to AggieAthletics.com this weekend for times and radio information.
Blinn loaded the bases in the top of the first with three straight walks before a fourth pushed the first run of the game across the plate. A hit-by-pitch and an illegal pitch forced two more runs as Blinn took a 3-0 lead.
The Buccaneers added two more runs in the top of the third for the 5-0 lead when a home run over left-center sent two across.
Texas A&M tied the game with a five-run bottom-of-the-third. Back-to-back base hits by junior Brittany Clopton, who stole second, and senior Kaydee Rayburn put runners on first and third before an April Ryan single plated Clopton for the 1-5 run. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by junior Breanna Dozier and a bases-loaded walk by senior Jenna Stark forced two more runs for the Aggies. A sacrifice fly out by senior Taran Tyler put A&M within one run at 4-5 before freshman Reagan Boenker plated the tying run on a hit-by-pitch.
In the bottom of the fourth, Clopton hit her second infield single of the day. With two outs, Lanphear tripled to right-center field as Clopton scored the go-ahead run.
Boenker hit her first home run of the fall that skimmed the foul pole in left field as three runners crossed the plate. Stark, who reached on a base hit, and Tyler, who hit a double to reach base, scored on the play.
With the Aggies leading 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth, Tyler again reached base as she drew a walk. A three-base throwing error that put Boenker on the base paths sent Tyler home for the final 10-5 run.
Blinn put up six runs on the game but was unable to stop the Aggie rally and come through with a win. Junior Sara Mireles started the game in the circle for the Aggies, giving up three runs on four walks in 0.0 innings of action. Sophomore Kristen Davenport threw six full innings, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five.
The Aggies got out to a better start in game two, plating four runs in the bottom of the first for an early lead. A bases-loaded error that sent senior Nicole Morgan to first put the first run on the board. Senior Cassie Tysarczyk added to the tally with a base hit that plated the 2-0 run. An RBI groundout by Tyler and a sacrifice fly out by freshman Celena Massey completed the rally as the Aggies ended the first with a 4-0 lead.
Another four-run frame brought the Aggie advantage to 8-0 after the third inning. Tysarczyk drew a two-out walk and was joined on base by junior Allison Garrett who beat the throw on an infield single. Massey picked up her second RBI of the game with a base hit through the left side that sent Tysarczyk home for the 5-0 lead.
A throwing error by the Blinn shortstop put freshman Suzanne White on first and allowed Garrett to score, unearned. Massey and White also scored unearned runs, on a double by Ryan and a single by Albus.
A sacrifice fly out by Tysarczyk plated the 9-0 run for the Aggies in the bottom of the fourth before bomb over left-center by Massey plated three unearned runs for the 12-0 lead.
The Buccaneers were unable to respond to Texas A&M’s 14-hit effort and the Aggies swept the doubleheader.
Freshman Abby Donnell started the game and threw two complete innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. Sophomore transfer Katie Marks tossed two perfect frames, striking out three along the way. Junior Lauren Ainsley finished the game, fanning four batters and giving up two hits through three innings.
The Aggies will play their annual best-of-five Maroon & White Series next week, beginning with game one on Monday and playing one game per day until a team reaches three wins. Radio information and times for the intra-squad scrimmage will be announced at a later date.
